Rivers Avenue, Ashley Phosphate Road, Dorchester Road and Montague Avenue each carry heavy daily traffic, and the I-26 / I-526 interchange sits right in the middle of it.
That layout matters for vehicle repair. A shop that is three miles away on the map can easily be twenty-five minutes away at 5 p.m., and getting the car there and back usually requires a second driver or a rideshare each way. What Stop-and-Go North Charleston Traffic Does to a Car
Brakes are the clearest example. Dense surface-street traffic on Rivers Avenue or Ashley Phosphate means far more brake applications per mile than highway driving, and brake pads wear by application rather than by odometer reading. Vehicles driven mostly in this corridor often need pads noticeably sooner than the mileage would suggest.
Cooling systems take the second hit. Idling in traffic in Lowcountry summer heat gives a radiator very little airflow while the engine keeps producing heat. Marginal thermostats, tired water pumps and slow coolant leaks tend to reveal themselves here rather than on the interstate.
Air conditioning is the third. A/C that seems adequate at highway speed can feel useless while crawling through an interchange, because compressor output and condenser airflow both drop at low speed. A lot of our summer calls in North Charleston start with “it only blows warm when I stop moving.”
